Apatite is a dual-action stone, known for its positive use of personal power to achieve goals. Apatite is believed to have physical, emotional, and spiritual healing properties. Apatite may be light, bright, or dark blue, sometimes all within the same crystal. Its purifying energy creates an envelope of light around your aura, repelling negative energies and guarding against psychic attack. This stone cleanses the aura and chakras, releasing attachments and negativity to restore clarity. Apatite is often mentioned in legends and folklore. It’s said to be a stone of good luck and prosperity sometimes called the “stone of happy dreams.”

Apatite is also the stone associated with animal conservation, because it is composed of the mineral phosphate that makes up the teeth and bones of all vertebrate animals, as well as their horns, antlers or tusks.

While apatite deposits can be found across the globe, key sources include Brazil, Mexico, Russia, India, Norway and the United States.  In Ontario, Canada, apatite deposits were discovered in the 19th century. Canadian apatite was initially mined for its phosphate content before gaining recognition for its gemstone qualities. The discovery of neon apatite in Canada expanded the geographical range of this gemstone which added to the global tapestry of apatite varieties. It can form in deposits that are either solid or liquid. In most cases, apatite deposits are related to the processes of plate tectonics and volcanic activity. Apatite is a major source of phosphorus which can be used in fertilizers, glass, cement, toothpaste and chemicals but the gemstone varieties have made it popular for jewelry and crystal healing.

HISTORY

Although apatite is a gemstone that was only recently identified in mineralogical history, it was long overlooked due to its ability to masquerade as other gemstones. This contributed to its relative absence in ancient accounts. However, its use dates back much further than its official recognition. Apatite is a recently discovered mineral and has no legends associated with it in history. It was first discovered in 1786 in St. Gotthard, Switzerland and its name comes from the Greek word “apatao” meaning to deceive or be misleading.  The name was chosen because the variety of colors and formations in which this stone occurs makes it easy to mistake for other minerals.  Deceiver is also said to relate to the lore that it is believed to have the power to trick people into seeing things that are not really there. It was given its name by Abraham Gottlob Werner.

Apatite was first mentioned in history by Theophrastus in 315 BC, who noted that it was used as a gemstone. He also described the mineral’s lustrous and glassy appearance but did not mention any particular use for it. In ancient Greece and Rome, it was used as an ingredient in toothpaste to help clean teeth and improve oral health.

Apatite was mentioned in Medieval Times. It was often called “tourmaline” because of its banded colors, and it was thought to have some magical properties. People believed that apatite could improve your eyesight, make you more eloquent, and even protect you from evil spirits

Apatite is a mineral that is found in jewelry, and it has been used for centuries. Its popularity stems from its unique color, which can range from blue to green, and it has been used in jewelry by royalty for years. In fact, the British Crown Jewels contain several pieces of apatite jewelry.

In traditional Chinese medicine Apatite is used to promote healthy digestion and relieve digestive problems. Today apatite is still used in some traditional medicines, as well as in crystal healing therapies.

An intriguing legend connected to apatite comes from the Logrosan mine in Extremadura, Spain. This mine, known for its apatite deposits, is linked to the mysterious “cercon de la Brujas” (witches’ circle). According to the legend, witches used apatite during nocturnal rituals by throwing it into the fire. Due to its chemical composition, apatite produced fluorescent sparks, enhancing the mystical and magical aspect of these ceremonies. This symbolic use gave the stone a reputation as a spiritual catalyst, believed to communicate with other dimensions.

Apatite is often used as an example of a mineral in movies and TV shows when characters need to identify a specific type of rock. For instance, the mineral was featured prominently in the 2009 blockbuster movie “Avatar” as the fictional mineral known as Unobtanium. In the movie, the mineral was sought after because it was believed to be the only element that could be used to power spaceships.

CHAKRAS

Blue Apatite stimulates the Third Eye and the Throat Chakras and can be used to balance energy and release negative emotions and social anxiety.

The Third Eye is the center of our perception and command. It directs our sight and everyday awareness of the world. Our consciousness is located here. The Third Eye is the center and we relate to ourselves through this chakra. When the Third Eye chakra is in balance we see clearly and understand what we see. We can interpret visual cues and our perception is high. Our thoughts and internal communications within ourselves are healthy and vibrant. We are open to new ideas, dreams, and visions. Apatite resonates with the Third Eye Chakra, which is connected to intuition and psychic abilities. This connection is said to enhance inner wisdom and spiritual insight.

The Throat Chakra is the voice of the body and the energy center connected to speaking your truth and expressing your core essence.  It is a pressure valve that allows the energy from the other chakras to be expressed. If it is blocked or out of balance, it can affect the health of the other chakras.  You may also experience difficulty communicating your thoughts and feelings, or you may be holding back from expressing yourself in a meaningful way.  Apatite relates to the throat chakra. Apatite is believed to clear away blockages or distortions that may be limiting communication and self-empowerment. When your Throat chakra is balanced you will feel connected to your truth and able to share it with others.  It allows the energy that springs upward from the lower chakras can continue its path enabling free expression and natural release.

CLEANSING AND CHARGING

Apatite is a durable gemstone but as with all gemstones requires some care to maintain its beauty over time. It’s important to care for your stone properly to keep it looking its best.

Cleansing your apatite is a wonderful way to connect with it and energetically cleanse away any negative or stagnant energy.

To cleanse your Apatite, simply hold it under running water or place it in a bowl of freshwater. For extra cleansing power, you can add some sea salt or lemon juice to the water.  For a bit more cleaning power you can clean your Apatite jewelry with mild soap and lukewarm water. Use a soft brush to gently remove any dirt or oils and rinse thoroughly.

Alternately you can place your apatite on a piece of Selenite or Amethyst. Selenite is a great choice for clearing away negative energy, while Amethyst is known for its ability to amplify the effects of other crystals.

Once you have cleansed away all of the stored negative energies from your Apatite you can charge it to bring it back to it’s full healing strength.

Placing your apatite in the direct rays of the sun for a few hours will infuse the stone with energy, which can help to revitalize its healing properties. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight which can fade the color of some Apatite.  Alternatively, you can charge your apatite under the moon which can be especially beneficial as the moon is thought to be a powerful source of energy and healing. Place your Apatite outside or near a window where it will get exposed to lunar light for at least six hours.

Apatite is a Stone of Manifestation, one of the best ways to use it is to imprint it with your intentions. Simply hold your stone close to your heart and concentrate on those areas of your life that you wish to seek it’s help with.  See in your mind the goals that you wish to achieve so that your Apatite will become the conduit to aid in your achieving them.

Lastly, to ensure you keep your gemstones in their best condition, if possible, store them in a soft pouch or box lined with felt or velvet to prevent scratches and chips.  Even though Apatite is relatively durable avoid wearing Apatite jewelry during activities that might expose it to hard knocks.  Do no use ultrasonic cleaners and steamers which could cause fractures in your Apatite.  Keep your Apatite away from harsh chemicals or cleaners.
