HISTORY

Garnets were among the very first gemstones known to mankind, dating back over 5,000 years. Garnets have been considered a prize possession since the Bronze Age. In fact, the oldest dating Garnet was found on a man who was buried in 3000 B.C. The word Garnet derives from Gernet meaning “dark red” and the word “Granatus” meaning grain or seed, in reference to its resemblance to a Pomegranate. In ancient times, the red Garnet was thought to be imbued with the energetic life force of blood.

In the past, Garnet was believed to have healing properties because of its blood red color. As such, it was seen as a symbol of strength, vitality and passion. Warriors would often carry Garnet into battle for extra vigor and courage. Garnets have been found in century-old tombs proving that this pomegranate stone is as durable as some of our most ancient artifacts. Garnet was a stone of travelers, a mark of the goddess, the unsung hope of biblical stories, and used for healing for many centuries. Archeologists recovered Garnet necklaces in ancient Egyptian tombs.  Multitudes of talismans buried to protect mummified pharaohs in the afterlife.

Garnet jewelry and stones were popular in ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, being used as ornamental adornments and signs of power. The ancient Greeks had a lovely explanation of why the winter months set in. According to Ancient Greek mythology, Hades captured Persephone, the daughter of Zeus and the Goddess of Sunshine, and brought her to the underworld. Before releasing her, the god of the underworld wanted to ensure her return. Before releasing Persephone, Hades fed her sweet pomegranate seeds, knowing she would be returning for more, which she does every Winter. Because of this ancient myth, Garnet, the gemstone named after the pomegranate seeds, became associated with the promise of a safe return. Some scholars believe that Hades’ gift of pomegranate seeds actually backfired and protected Persephone instead.

Garnet is a stone steeped in history having been used as adornment for several centuries, especially in Europe. During the European Middle Ages, clergy viewed Garnets as symbols of Christ’s blood and sacrifice. In the Middle Ages, wearing Garnet jewelry was believed to enhance truth, faith and love commitments. During the Middle Ages, Garnet was used as a cure for the Black Plague. Medieval Europeans also believed Garnet prevented arguments, ensured faithfulness and warned the wearer of approaching danger by changing colors.

The use of Garnet in battle was not just a European thing. Tribes in both North America and the Northern Indian/Pakistan region both used Garnets as force amplifiers, using small Garnets as bullets, believing that they would cause more harm than a regular one.

Garnets were frequently used for jewelry in the Victorian times. Kings and Queens often relied on the Garnet’s reputation for protection and safety. Royalty quite often wore Garnet jewelry to ward off harm. Both Queen Victoria and Mary, Queen of Scots, were well-known for their lavish, Garnet-adorned clothing worn as a source of protecting themselves.

CLEANSING AND CHARGING

By absorbing negative energy in its environment, Garnet takes on a protective role. But it needs to discharge this built-up dense energy in order to keep functioning. Try cleansing Garnet at least once a week or whenever you sense it needs a vibrational boost. Keeping your Garnet cleansed and charged keeps its vibration high and allows it to work at optimal strength and always ready to bring its healing power whenever and however it is needed.

A regular cleansing and charging makes sure that your Garnet shakes off any negative energy and is ready and refreshed to help you with whatever the world sends your way.

Cleansing your Garnet is simple, a little soapy water goes a long way in helping this sun stone to shine once more. Make sure that the water isn’t too hot as Garnet brings its own warmth. Also, be sure to rinse well and dry your Garnet completely.

You can also bury your Garnets in a bowl of dry sea salt or brown rice overnight. The salt or rice will help draw out impurities.

Smudging it in the smoke of sacred herbs like white sage, palo santo, or incense will also draw out all of the negative energy it has stored within it. Simply wave the smoke over the stone to lift away stagnant energy.

If you are looking for a way to turn up the potent power of your Garnet, you can recharge your healing crystal by leaving it on top of a cluster of other cleansing stones like clear quartz, selenite, or amethyst.  Doing that will absorb all the bad energy stored in your Garnet and infuse it with an endless flow of love.

You can also place it in direct sunlight or moonlight. The light will help clear away accumulated energy. Do this for an hour or more.

Whatever cleansing and charging rituals you choose to practice, always try to end by holding your Garnet close to your heart while concentrating on your hopes and desires for your life. This will imbue your intention into your Gemstone making it all the more powerful for you to meet your needs
