HISTORY

The origins of Goldstone are murky. It was first created by Italian monks in the 1600s, who accidentally discovered the technique of producing this beautiful stone while trying to create gold. Copper flakes were unintentionally thrown over into a cauldron of molten glass during the procedure, resulting in the very first Goldstone.

Goldstone is shrouded in mystery and legendary folklore that can be traced back to the Miotti family. Goldstone can be solidly traced to Venice and Vincenzo Miotti. The earliest written reference to the creation of the material we call goldstone is linked to Miotti being granted exclusive license by the Venetian head of state (the Doge) to create this sparkling opaque glass. The Miotti family kept their technique secret for hundreds of years until an Italian glassmaker named Pietro Bigaglia brought it to the mainstream in the 1800’s.

However, there are earlier records of Goldstone being here – whether that was in Iran in the twelfth century or by the Romans. A deep red variation—called haematinum or purpurin—may have been made by the Romans, with the recipe getting lost during the Dark Ages.

Another legend traces its origins to medieval times and an obscure monastic order, giving it the name Monk’s Gold. There are earlier samples including a smooth amulet from Iran that dates from the 1100s to the 1200s. It has been linked to the medieval art of alchemy almost from its creation.
