Hematite

Hematite, also spelled Haematite, is the mineral form of Iron Oxide. It is part of the trigonal crystal system and is often found in rocks and soil. Hematite has a metallic like luster and colors that range from black to grey and silver, along with more reddish-brown varieties. Hematite is one of the most powerful protective and grounding stones in the mineral kingdom, intended to root your body and mind back to Earth. Hematite is found in many deposits around the world, but largest deposits of hematite are found in Quebec, Canada, around Lake Superior. Crude hematite spherules were found on Mars in 2004, raising once again the possibility of the presence of water, which is essential for the formation of this mineral.

HISTORY

This mineral, originally referred to as “Haematite” wasn’t officially discovered until 1773 by Jean Baptiste Rome de I’Isle who removed the first “e” to make it “Hematite.” While Hematite typically looks shiny silver, when it is powdered or captured in Clear Quartz, it is bright red.  The Greek word for blood “haima” is due to the color the mineral turns when ground to powder.  Therefor the name “Hematite” comes from the Greek word haimatitis, meaning “blood red.”

Hematite has an extremely ancient historical record and is included in the majority of ancient and medieval lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers. Hematite is a very special mineral that was believed to be used by man 164,000 years ago. A small area south of Mossel Bay in South Africa has been excavated many times since 2000 and produced numerous artifacts dating back hundreds of thousands of years. Hematite’s history stretches back to the Neolithic period, and probably far beyond that. It has been found in Neolithic burials in both Europe and Asia. In Europe, mummified remains have been found with powdered Hematite smeared on the skin, creating a reddish tint. In China, skeletal remains surrounded by pieces of Hematite have been uncovered. Since such burials were made before the invention of writing, it is impossible to know, for certain, why the Hematite was used.

Ancient civilizations valued Hematite for its ornamental and healing purposes. The Ancient Egyptians used it in amulets and jewelry, believing it brought protection and strength. In ancient Greece, warriors carried Hematite into battle, believing it provided courage and invincibility. In Egypt, hematite was primarily used to cure blood-related diseases as the stone displays the same colour. When hematite is placed in water, it taints it red. The Egyptians considered that this peculiar quality stimulated blood production.

Hematite was closely associated with several of the Greek Gods. At the beginning of creation, the primal sky god, Uranus, was married to his mother, the earth goddess Gaia.  Uranus hated his children and banished them to Tartarus, the Greek equivalent of Hell. Gaia responded by freeing her son Cronus and gave him a diamond sickle. Cronus used this weapon to castrate his father Uranus. As Uranus’s blood dripped down from its wound on to earth, it was petrified as Hematite. Hematite was also a sacred stone for Ares the God of war, son of the Greek God Zeus, since it was believed to heal cuts and other wounds. As a result, Greek soldiers smeared powdered Hematite on their skin before going into battle.

In Mesopotamia, a lapidary written by Azchalias for King Mithridates the Great (135-63 BCE), included a through examination of Hematite. Numerous archaeological digs in Mesopotamia have found Hematite seals, jewelry and other small decorative items.

During the European Middle Ages, it was sometimes called “Bloodstone” and it has been known as the “stone which bleeds” in countless lapidaries. Also in the Middle Ages, hematite acted as a farmer’s talisman and was worn in the belief that the stone strengthened their crops. In the 13th Century, hematite was engraved with a figure of a bat and then worn by magicians who believed it strengthened their spells.

NASA made a remarkable discovery when they found Hematite on Mars. It was found by the infrared spectrometer on the NASA Mars Global Surveyor and the 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft when it was orbiting the planet. What makes this even more interesting is the need of water for Hematite to occur. NASA Scientists are now studying the images and samples in which they took to help better understand the environment of Mars, and if it is suitable for life.

CHAKRAS

Hematite’s grounding energy is most closely associated with the Root chakra, the foundation of physical and spiritual energy in the body.  The root chakra is particularly essential to the chakra energy system because a lack of “roots” might jeopardize the integrity of the other chakras, impacting the overall health of the body, mind, and spirit. By creating a strong sense of energetic stability, this crystal works to align, clear and balance your root chakra so you feel centered and secure.

Hematite enhances intuition with its stabilizing energy. Connecting deeply with the Root Chakra, it grounds spiritual energies, fostering a heightened sense of inner knowing. By creating a strong, energetic base, it’s believed to foster a harmonious flow of energy, helping to dissipate feelings of fear and insecurity. This can lead to an enhanced sense of self-confidence and willpower. By aligning this chakra, Hematite is believed to foster a sense of safety and security. Its stabilizing influence encourages a balanced and anchored foundation, empowering you to navigate life’s challenges with resilience.  We can only focus on growing when we believe that our most basic requirements have been satisfied.  The number vibration of nine is often utilized to assist balance the root chakra.

CLEANSING AND CHARGING

Regularly cleansing Hematite is essential to maintaining its effectiveness and energy. Hematite is susceptible to water, avoid direct contact with water and salt water due to its iron content, which can cause rust. It is best to cleanse and charge your Hematite using dry cleansing methods which will ensure its energetic and physical properties are maintained.

You can care for your hematite by placing it on a selenite charging plate, or using sound healing with a singing bowl.

Some other effective ways to cleanse and charge your Hematite include smudging with sage smoke, placing it in sunlight or moonlight, or placing it near other cleansing crystals like Amethyst or Clear Quartz.
