Beautiful in a stunning transcendent Blue, the Kyanite stone gets its name from Greek born from the word Kuanos or Kyanos meaning “deep blue”, Kyanite has gone through a rich and varied naming process. It was once commonly called Disthene, which means “two strengths”, and at different stages in its life, it has also been called Rhaeticide and Cyanite. The stone was given its current name, Kyanite, by the German geologist Abraham G. Werner in 1789. Though not as prominently documented as some ancient gems, Kyanite has long held a quiet place in the mythos of seekers, sages, and wanderers.

For centuries, Kyanite was frequently mistaken for sapphire because of their similar deep blue color and appearance. This confusion contributed to a lack of distinct historical narratives and myths for Kyanite itself.

Kyanite was used in ancient Egypt for spiritual insight and communication, associated with the sea god Neptune by Greeks and Romans for protection at sea.
