Larvikite isn’t a stone that shouts, it listens. Its light reminds us that wisdom doesn’t necessarily always come from radiance, but from reflection. Larvikites name originates from the Larvik Fjord region in Norway, where this type of igneous rock is found.  It is sometimes misleadingly called “Black Moonstone” and even “Labradorite”, more likely because they are all Feldspar minerals and are all notable for their flashy iridescence.  Larvikite has been mined continually in Norway since 1884. The vast majority of the world’s Larvikite comes from the Larvik Batholith (also known as the Larvik Pluton) near the town of Larvik in southern Norway. The Norwegian deposit is very large and will most likely be mined for centuries to come.

Larvikite, primarily sourced from Larvik, Norway, is known for its unique composition of feldspar and other minerals that create its mesmerizing blue reflections. Named after its place of origin, this stone is not just a national treasure but also a piece of Earth’s deep history. Larvikite is believed to have formed over 298 million years ago, at an estimated depth of 18 miles below Earth’s surface. Since then, a few deposits have been discovered throughout the world, with the other major source coming out of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. The Canadian variety is likely much older, perhaps as old as 2.7 billion years.
