HISTORY

Rose Quartz is also called Pink Quartz or Hyaline Quartz and takes its name from the pale pink hue of its coloring and from the Greek word Hyalos which means glass.  It was referred to in antiquity as a Bohemian or Silesian Ruby. To understand the history of Rose Quartz, we need to travel back to ancient civilizations. The discovery of Rose Quartz dates back to 7000 BC in Mesopotamia (today’s Iraq). Around 800-600 BC, Assyrians were skilled in fashioning Rose Quartz jewelry, possibly making them among the earliest users of this stone, alongside the Romans. Ancient Rome, Egypt, and Greece civilizations all employed Quartz crystals as powerful charms. Rose Quartz served as a seal of ownership for the Romans.

In ancient Egypt, Rose Quartz was used not only for its romantic connotations but also for its protective properties. Egyptians believed that this enchanting gemstone could shield against negative energy and promote physical and emotional healing. Carved amulets and talismans made from Rose Quartz were often placed on the bodies of the deceased to ensure their safe passage to the afterlife. They also valued it for its powers of beautification, facial masks of Rose Quartz have been recovered from Egyptian tombs as they believed that this stone could stave off the effects of aging by preventing wrinkles and both Egyptians and Romans believed that it would clear the complexion.

It’s a stone rich in mythology and synonymous with the whimsical gods and goddesses of history like Aphrodite and Adonis. Rose Quartz is linked to these Greek mythological figures, Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty, pleasure and procreation, and her lover Adonis through a legend where their mingled blood stained white Quartz, creating the pink stone. Adonis, Aphrodite’s mortal lover and a renowned hunter, was attacked and mortally wounded by a wild boar. As Aphrodite rushed to his aid, she cut herself on a briar bush.  When her blood mixed with Adonis’s on the ground it formed the first Rose Quartz. To this day, Rose Quartz is often referred to as the “love stone,” a tribute to the Greek goddess and her affectionate nature.

Rose Quartz was also a stone honored by the Tibetan and Oriental cultures and continues to be one of the major carving stones of China. Australian sorcerers make powerful sacred water out of this stone that they call liquefied Quartz and consider to be a panacea. The allure of Rose Quartz continued to flourish through the ages. This gemstone was in high demand for jewelry and ornamental objects during the European Renaissance. The beautiful pink shades of Rose Quartz enhanced the romantic ideals of the era, and it became a symbol of love, beauty, and desire.
