Sapphire

Sapphire is a deep blue stone that is a variety of corundum. It consists of aluminium oxide with traces of iron, magnesium, chromium and titanium. It is a precious gemstone that is highly sought after. The meaning of Sapphire is joy and wisdom and is also associated with truth and loyalty. The Sapphire stone is related to the Ruby in terms of their elemental makeup, but the presence of iron in Sapphire is what lends it that rich blue coloring. It’s one of the four true precious gemstones and takes its place alongside Diamond, Emerald, and Rubies. Sapphire is a 5th and a 45th Anniversary gemstone.

HISTORY

Sapphire has been one of the most highly sought after gemstones throughout history.  It is included in all major lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers. Taking its name from the Greek word Sappheiros and the Latin Sapphirus – both translating to Blue Stone, the Sapphire is loved for its rich and heady deep blue hues. But it’s only been since the Middle Ages that we call the Sapphire stone by that name

Sapphires have been prized as great gemstones since 800BC. Blue Sapphires were a holy stone within the Catholic church.  It is claimed that Moses was handed over the 10 Commandments on a plate made from Sapphire. This gives Sapphire an unmatched value in religious terms, when compared to any precious or semi-precious gemstone. It is for this reason that Sapphire is also referred to as a Divine stone. It is also the reason why it can be found in the jewels adorned by priests, kings and the royalty. In later Christian writings, Sapphire was thought to be linked to St. Paul.  Because of these spiritual traditions, the Roman Catholic Church has long favored Blue Sapphires, giving them as ecclesiastical rings to Bishops and other high-ranking priests.

Ancient Persians believed Sapphires made the sky blue with their reflections and represent the heavens.  In ancient Greece and Rome, kings and queens believed that blue Sapphires would protect them from envy and harm. In European lore, Sapphire is linked to the Greek hero Prometheus, who introduced fire to mankind, against the will of the gods.

Sapphire has been symbolic of nobility, sincerity, truth, and faithfulness to various cultures for centuries. Today, Sapphire is known to symbolize royalty.  For many centuries, it was considered one of the ‘Five Cardinal Gemstones’, comparable only with Diamond, Ruby, Emerald and Amethyst.  The oldest European crown still in existence was made for King Recceswinth of the Visigoths and is decorated with Sapphires and Pearls. The oldest stone in the British Crown Jewels is St. Edward’s Sapphire first worn by King Edward in 1046 in his coronation ring. Today, St. Edward’s Sapphire sits in the center of the cross, at the top of the Imperial State Crown.  In the modern-day era, the gem continues to shine above all others and a Sapphire engagement ring was even gifted to Lady Diana. Kings and queens adored this gem because it was said to be a talisman of cornflower blue that kept them safe and surrounded by the light of wisdom.

Beautiful Sapphires have been found in numerous locations around the world, and a trained gemologist can often identify their source based on their natural color. Typically speaking, Sri Lankan Sapphires are usually cited as the most consistent source for high-quality gemstones.  Despite having been mined for thousands of years, new Sapphires and other gemstones are constantly being found. The most beautiful Sapphires ever found are from Kashmir and were found during the late 19th century.  These are the Blue Sapphires that set the standard against which all others are measured. The seams ran out after only a decade, but these Sapphire occasionally come back on the market, typically sold in auction. The most expensive Sapphire ever sold, was a loose Kashmir Blue Sapphire.  It sold at Christie’s for over $7 million dollars in 2020.

CHAKRAS

Sapphire connects to the Throat Chakra and the Third Eye Chakra fostering clear communication, self-expression, enhancing one’s psychic abilities and intuition, mental clarity, and spiritual wisdom. While its deep blue hue often enhances the truth-telling aspect of the Throat chakra, its ability to promote a deeper understanding of self and higher consciousness extends to the Third Eye chakra. It is thought to aid in the development of spiritual wisdom, allowing individuals to see beyond the material world and access higher realms of consciousness. Having a clear line between the Throat chakra and the Third Eye chakra is an important bridge for those who want to connect to their intuitive knowledge as the foundation for their communication, and who want to take responsibility for their own thoughts and feelings rather than feeling helpless and at the mercy of the world.

The Third Eye chakra is the gateway to our inner wisdom, the center of our perception and it commands and directs our sight and everyday awareness of the world. This is where our inner sight sits and how we tap into our own intuition to make heartfelt wise choices that align with our spirit and core belief system. Sapphire’s connection to the Third Eye chakra enhances mental clarity, intuition, and insight, allowing for a clearer perception of situations. It helps in accessing deeper levels of consciousness, gaining wisdom, and understanding underlying truths beyond surface appearances.  This connection can lead to enhanced foresight and spiritual growth. When the Third Eye chakra is in balance our thoughts and internal communications within ourselves are healthy and vibrant. We are open to new ideas, dreams, and visions, and can control the flow of energy within all the chakras.

The Throat chakra is essential in learning how to communicate our truth and show our inner selves to the outside world. When your Throat chakra is blocked or out of balance, it can affect the health of the other chakras. Blockage may cause you to struggle with issues of boundaries, being heard, and decisive action. When it is open and flowing, we aren’t afraid to use our words in communicating our emotions, beliefs, and personal truths with the world. Sapphire is a powerful stone for opening the Throat chakra.  Wearing Sapphire or meditating with it can help you communicate more effectively and fearlessly. When the Throat chakra is flowing, it helps with expressing yourself and taking decisive action.

CLEANSING AND CHARGING

Sapphire is a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale which means it has plenty of strength and durability therefore very easy to clean. However, since it is a precious gemstone, it’s encouraged to have a light hand when dealing with it.

Like all crystals and precious energy gemstones out there, you want to keep your Sapphire cleansed and charged so that it’s always ready to lend a healing hand. Taking care of your Sapphire jewelry ensures its lasting beauty and durability. Here’s how to keep these stunning gems in top condition.

One of the best ways to cleanse your Sapphire is to run it under tepid or cool water. There is a lot of air and water energy in Sapphires meaning that it responds quite favorably to the power of water. Alternately you can use warm, soapy water and a soft brush to clean your Sapphires.

Other spiritual ways to cleanse and charge up your Sapphire include leaving it under the light of the early morning sun or the light of the full moon to cleanse it. Leaving it outside or on a window ledge will both work.  Sunlight can be particularly effective for charging the stone, while moonlight is excellent for spiritually purifying it of negative energy.

You can also bury your Sapphire in the earth for several hours to allow it to reconnect with the planet’s natural energies.  Direct contact with Mother Earth will drain away stored negative energy and revitalize all of your Sapphires healing energies.

Sapphire can also be smudged using your favorite spiritual smudging scent.  Pass your Sapphire through the smoke of burning sage or other spiritual incense to cleanse it of negative energy to its core.

Other methods of charging include leaving it in the presence of other cleansing gemstones like Clear Quartz. Place your Sapphire on or near a piece of Quartz, Selenite or Amethyst, which are all known for their purifying and recharging properties.

Once you have cleansed your Sapphire hold it in your hand or lay it on your heart and set a clear imprint for its use and energy.  Concentrate on your desires and dreams to charge your Sapphire with your personal positive intention.

Never use harsh chemicals or acids on your Sapphire, as they can cause damage. Also keep Sapphires far away from harsh chemicals found in household cleaners. Remove your jewelry when cleaning or using any strong substances.

When you aren’t wearing your Sapphires store them in a soft pouch or lined jewelry box. This prevents scratching or damage from other jewelry pieces.
