HISTORY

Its name came from French “Pierre Turquoise” meaning “Turkish stone” because the trade routes that brought Turquoise to Europe from the mines in central Asia went through Turkey because of its position between Europe and Asia. Turquoise is one of, if not the longest used stone in all of human history.  Turquoise is perhaps the oldest stone in man’s history, the talisman of kings, shamans, and warriors. For centuries it has served as a healing tool for whole civilizations. Adored for centuries, Turquoise has been carved and set into everything from royal thrones and daggers to jewelry and cups.

It was one of the first gemstones to ever be mined and dates back to 6000 BC in the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt. The ancient Egyptians would bury their dead with Turquoise. The death mask of Tutankhamun was studded with Turquoise, as were the mosaic masks dedicated to the gods, the fabulous inlaid skulls, shields and power statues of Moctezuma, the last ruler of the Aztecs. In Iran and other Persian shores, this stone was known to have great spiritual value. Turquoise beads dating back to 5000 B.C. have been found in Iraq.

About 1000 years ago Native Americans began to find out about Turquoise and used it for jewelry, weapons, and amulets. They used Turquoise it to guard their burial sites and has been commonly found in burial sites on both continental Americas.  Indian priests wore it in ceremonies when calling upon the great spirit of the sky. Many honored Turquoise as the universal stone, believing it would open their mind up to the infinite possibilities the universe has to offer. To the prehistoric Indian, Turquoise, worn on the body or used in ceremonies always signified the god of the sky alive in the earth. The Navajos and other Native American shamans used Turquoise for cloud-busting (initiating much needed rain) by throwing it into a river while praying to the rain god. In our more modern world, Turquoise is synonymous with Native American culture, and the Navajo and Zuni people often use it to curate beautiful amulets, talismans, pendants, rings, bracelets, and even belt buckles.

In the Orient a Turquoise ring was worn as a protector against all things evil. The ring emitted protective energy only if the stone was given by a friend. It was believed to restore clear vision to the mind when the thinking became muddled and thus ensured good fortune.

CHAKRA

Turquoise is most strongly associated with the Throat Chakra, which is responsible for communication, self-expression, and truthfulness. Some sources also connect Turquoise, or varieties like African Turquoise, to the Heart Chakra for its ability to foster compassion and emotional well-being, and to the Third Eye Chakra for enhancing intuition and spiritual awareness.  It’s linked to balancing and aligning all Chakras helping to instill inner calm.

Turquoise works closely with our Throat Chakra which is the core of our communication and feeling heard both of which add to our sense of self-worth.  It activates the Throat Chakra making it easier to voice deep thoughts and opinions you might not normally voice outside your head. A blocked Throat Chakra can lead to many problems both within the way we speak to ourselves and how we communicate with the world. Turquoise opens our Throat Chakra allowing us to release old vows and inhibitions which allows our soul to express itself once more. Turquoise helps in releasing self-consciousness and helps our inner strength stand for itself once more. As a stone that connects with the Throat Chakra and invites it to flow, Turquoise is all about bringing your truth bubbling to the surface.

While the main color of the Third Eye Chakra is indigo, Turquoise is sometimes associated with the Third Eye for its ability to enhance wisdom, promote self-realization, aid in creative problem-solving, and facilitate protection against negative energy and pollutants.  This beautiful stone’s properties assist in creative problem-solving, which is a function of a well-balanced Third Eye. Turquoise enhances communication between the physical and spiritual worlds. It supports intuition and meditation. It helps us explore past lives and regards fate as ongoing and dependent on one’s action at any moment. Turquoise is known to promote self-realization and a deeper understanding of oneself.

Turquoise isn’t primarily associated with the Heart Chakra, but it can open the Heart Chakra for giving and receiving love. Its associations with the Heart Chakra are more indirect, acting as a catalyst for love, self-realization, and connection to others. The stone’s connection is also often described as activating the Higher Heart Chakra, located between the Heart and Throat Chakras. The stone’s energy can stimulate romantic love and promote self-love and acceptance.  When the Higher Heart is balanced, we feel all of the subtle vibrational messages that come from everything around us giving us the ability to interact with other people’s and animal’s feelings. The Higher Heart Chakra helps us communicate beyond words and share what you have in your Heart.

CLEANSING AND CHARGING

As with all gemstone jewelry, if you want your piece working within the fullest spectrum of its powers, it is important to care for it. After particularly deep healing sessions or tough days, your gemstones may need a little flush to keep their vibrations flowing with sweetness, grace and glory.

You can cleanse your Turquoise using moonlight.  Place your Turquoise under the light of a full or new moon which will help cleanse it of negative energy.

Another method is to smudge by gently passing your Turquoise through the smoke of sage, palo santo, or other sacred herbs, focusing on a positive intention.

Also placing your Turquoise on or near a Selenite plate, crystal cluster, or Amethyst geode to allow these self-cleansing stones to absorb negative energy.

Sound Healing using a singing bowl, chimes, or tuning fork to cleanse the stone with sound vibrations can aid in removing stored negative energy.

One of the easiest ways to cleanse away negative energies is to gently wash Turquoise with warm, soapy water and a soft-bristled brush, then rinse and dry it immediately to maintain its color and prevent damage.

Once you have cleansed away all of the stored negative energy you can then charge your Turquoise to bring it back to full potency.  Exposure to moonlight, especially the full moon, is an excellent way to charge your Turquoise with gentle, calming energy.

You can also charge Turquoise in the sun for a few hours, but avoid prolonged exposure, as this can cause its color to fade.

Once your Turquoise is cleansed and charged it is beneficial to set your intention within your stone. Hold the Turquoise and visualize it being charged with positive energy, love, and healing to infuse it with your intentions.
