HISTORY

Tanzanite is a valuable blue-purple gemstone from Tanzania, East Africa.  Tanzanite was originally discovered in 1967 in the Merelani Hills below Mount Kilimanjaro, and named for its country of origin, Tanzania. Popular legend regards Tanzanite as a gift from the gods, as its discovery is attributed to Masai cattle herders who first saw the blue stones after brown zoisite crystals on the ground were burned in a bush fire caused by lightning which cleared the plains below Mount Kilimanjaro. The area was strewn with brownish-red Zoisite and the heat from the flames created a chemical reaction that turned the stones blue-purple.

Manuel de Souza, an Indian prospector, was informed by locals or this beautiful stone and staked a claim to the area, believing the gems were sapphire. The stones were shortly afterwards identified as a new variety of the mineral zoisite by gemologists at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology.  Tiffany & Co. recognized this blue gem’s potential to rival more expensive sapphire and agreed to become its main distributor.  In 1968, Tiffany & Co. introduced the stone as “Tanzanite,” a name derived from its native land, Tanzania.

Keeping your Tanzanite cleansed and charged is the best way to make the most of that violet flame magic. Tanzanite can cloud over or become heavy or stagnant when it has been involved in big energy work. One of the best ways to cleanse Tanzanite is to run it under tepid water. As a water stone in some ways itself, it reacts very well to water.

You can cleanse and charge up your Tanzanite by smudging it with sage or any other energetic smudge stick.  It is also a good method to cleanse and charge your Tanzanite by placing it in the light of the full moon.  Burying your Tanzanite in soil or placing it in a pot with a plant will allow Mother Earths energy to regenerate it.  Placing it along side a piece of Clear Quartz or Selenite will also draw out all of the negative energy it has absorbed.
